Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER - Behind another strong outing from Tom Cochran and a balanced offensive attack, the Worcester Tornadoes earned the series split with a 6-5 win over the Quebec Capitales on Monday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Cochran pitched seven plus strong innings while giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. He outdueled the league-leader in ERA Luis Valdez who already beat Worcester twice this season. In the process, Cochran picked up his league-leading 12th win, bouncing back from his first loss of the season which came in his last outing. He also became the first pitcher to defeat the Capitales three times in 2008. Quebec committed four errors on the evening, one day after making five miscues. Scott Grimes, B.J. Weed, Francisco Caraballo, and Chuck Jeroloman finished with a pair of hits while the six runs were driven in by six different hitters. Eddie Pena inherited a jam with none out in the eighth and pitched effectively to earn his sixth save of the season.

The Tornadoes capitalized on a Quebec error to plate two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Omar Pena reached first on an error by third baseman Patrick Deschenes. Mike MacMillan followed with an RBI double that got by a diving Alex Nunez in right. Josh Farkes then plugged the gap in left-center to score MacMillan for the 2-0 lead.

Caraballo took the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth over the center field wall for the solo home run and the 3-0 lead. It marked his second home run in as many games and his 14th long ball of the season.

Worcester tacked on another in the fifth behind Weed's second hit of the game. Grimes led off with an infield single, reaching second on shortstop Jose Contreras' errant throw to first. Weed followed with a base hit to right field to plate Grimes for the 4-0 lead.

Quebec picked up its first run of the game behind a Mike Goss solo home run to left field which made it 4-1. His third home run of the season broke up a string of 10 consecutive Capitales batters retired by Cochran.

Jeroloman's seventh inning single drove in Alex Trezza for Worcester's fifth run of the game. Omar Pena followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Caraballo for some much-needed insurance and the 6-1 advantage.

The Capitales mounted a rally in the eighth to pull back with two at 6-4. After Josh Colafemina reached on an error, Goss doubled to right field. Contreras plated both with a double of his own to make it 6-3. Quebec's fourth run crossed the plate on a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Eddie Lantigua.

Goefrey Tomlinson added a sacrifice fly in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Tornadoes held on for the 6-5 win.

Worcester now looks ahead to a seven-game road trip starting with a doubleheader at Atlantic City on Tuesday. Matt Weagle takes the hill for Game 1; he will be opposed by J.C. Huguet. Justin Edwards makes his first-career start in Game 2 opposite of Derek Barrows. Worcester returns home on Tuesday, Aug. 19 for the final homestand of the season which is highlighted by Back to School Night on Aug. 22, Fan Appreciation Night/Fireworks Show on the 23rd, and Tykes Club on the 24th!
