Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - Two days after scoring 14 runs against Nashua, the Worcester Tornadoes couldn't muster any offense, falling 6-1 to Brockton in the preseason finale on Tuesday evening at Fitton Field.
Worcester picked up its lone run of the game in the fourth inning, but the Rox responded by retiring 14 consecutive batters, including a string of five straight via the strikeout, to deny any hopes of a comeback.
The Tornadoes offense never got anything going, finishing with only five hits and striking out 15 times in the defeat. Rico Santana led the way with two hits while Chris Colabello, Alex Trezza, and Scott Grimes added one apiece.
Brockton got off to the quick start with a run in the first inning and two more in the third. Phillip Cuadrado got the scoring started with a long double to center field which plated Dominic Ramos all the way from first base. Two innings later, Jud Thigpen drove in Ervin Alcanata with a two-out RBI double off the right field wall. Matt Maloney followed with a single that found the hole between shortstop and third, scoring Ramos for the 3-0 advantage.
With the bases loaded and only one out in the top of the fourth, it looked like the Rox would break the game wide open, but Jake Ociesa educed Ramos into a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning unscaved. Trezza made sure the effort wouldn't go to waste, doubling into the left-center field gap to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a wild pitch, he crossed the plate on a Francisco Caraballo sacrifice fly for Worcester's first run of the game.
Behind two hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen in the top of the sixth, Brockton scored three times to extend its lead to 6-1. The Rox continued to gain opportunities, but the Worcester pitching staff came up big to strand 15 base runners in keeping the game within reach.
The Tornadoes now look ahead to Thursday when they kick off the regular season at Sussex. After traveling to Nashua, the first regular season home game is set for Thursday, May 29, also against Sussex.
