Worcester Tornadoes News Release

After two nights of falling just short, Worcester rallied and dosed out a little of the Bears' medicine as the Tornadoes grabbed a 5-3 come from behind victory over Newark Wednesday night at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

The Tornadoes rallied from a 2-0 deficit and immediately responded to a 3-3 tie to draw within 2.5 games of the Bears in the standings.

Mike Gedman continued his terrific streak at the plate with a go-ahead home run and the game-winning double to innings later. The Tornadoes left-handed hitting pitcher/first baseman finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

Jerod Edmondson finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs and Jimmy Best reached three times with two singles and a walk.

The Tornadoes received a terrific pitching performance from Connor Hulse who went six innings allowing two hits, four walks and two earned runs in his best start to date. Hulse was in line for the win when he left but the bullpen had a slight hiccup before closing out the Bears.

Sean Keeler grabbed his first win of the season for Worcester pitching a third of an inning and stranding one runner in the seventh. Matt McDonald pitched a perfect eight and Nick Serino earned his ninth save of the season striking out two and allowing a walk. Newark jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Hulse walked D'Angelo Jimenez and gave up a towering home run to Daryle Ward over the right-field scoreboard. Hulse would settled down from their though, retiring seven in a row and allowing just six baserunners over the next five innings.

The Tornadoes slowly but surely cut in to the lead, tacking on a single run in the bottom half of the first. Edmondson walked and moved over to third on a Bears error and a deep fly ball to right field that Edmondson took third base on. Worcester's cleanup hitter ensured Edmondson would come home, as Gedman hit a hard liner in the infield for a fielder's choice to make it 2-1.

After a scoreless second inning, Worcester tied the score at 2-2 in the third. Newark starter Greg Lane walked Brendon Kelliher and Chris Torres to put runners on first and second, before Alex Nunez hit an RBI single to center for the second run of the inning.

Gedman put the Tornadoes ahead for just the second time in the series, when he lofted a ball over the left-field fence on a breaking ball. It was Gedman's third home run of the season and second in two days, as tomorrow's starting pitcher has recorded five RBI in the past two games.

The Bears scored an unearned run in the seventh inning off of Kyle Regnault but Worcester immediately responded. Edmondson singled to lead of the inning and moved over to third base with two outs on a wild pitch to give Gedman the chance for another RBI. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Gedman hit a tailing fly ball down the left-field line that fell just in front of a diving Bryce Lane to easily score Edmondson and put Gedman on third after a throwing error. Worcester tacked on the insurance run when the losing pitcher, Zachary Goyer, threw his second wild pitch of the inning to make it 5-3.

Worcester's bullpen left no hope for a Bears' comeback, as McDonald and Serino retired six of the seven batters they faced, including three strikeouts.

Gedman will look to continue his red-hot week Thursday, when he takes the mound at 7:05 p.m. trying to help the Tornadoes split the series with the Bears.
