Tornadoes Lose Finale 7-5

August 2, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Tornadoes leave Worcester, MA tomorrow with a sour taste in their mouth, as the 'nadoes lose the third and decisive series game against the New Jersey Jackals 7-5 on Thursday, August 2nd.

Matt McDonald coudn't keep the Tornadoes in the eighth, picking up his fourth loss of 2012. McDonald allowed the two go-ahead runs before Nick Serino allowed an insurance run for the Jackals.

Pavlik sneaks into tied for second in the Can-Am League in wins, collecting his eighth win of his 2012 campaign. The five runs that the Tornadoes scored were not earned for Pavlik over his seven innings of work, and the lefty only walked two and struck out seven.

Keith Cantwell closed out the game to pick up his eleventh save, retiring the only two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.

The Jackals scored three runs against starter Kevin Cooper, scoring two in the first inning and one in the fifth. Cooper finished day after five innings, walking four and striking out three. Cooper was pitching on four days rest, the first time a Tornadoes pitcher had pitched on short rest.

The bottom of the sixth was the most interesting for both teams. The Tornadoes batted around, scoring five runs on only three hits. Jackals shortstop Matt Nandin committed three errors, and he and NIck Giarraputo allowed a Jerod Edmondson pop fly to drop between them, scoring two Tornadoes on the play.

The spotlight went back on the Jackals, and they shined once again, picking up three decisive runs in the seventh and eighth off Mike Mullen and Matt McDonald.

Jackals lefty Jeff Gogal struck out everyone he faced in an inning in a third before Cantwell nailed down the save.

The Tornadoes remain in fourth place, while the Jackals keep pace with Les Capitales in the battle at the top of the standings.

The Tornadoes begin a six game road trip tomorrow, traveling to neighboring Canada to take on Les Capitales in Quebec City. Walker McKinven will take the bump for the Tornadoes, as they look to slow down the first place Canadian side.
