New Jersey Jackals News Release
Three errors and miscommunication on a pop up in the sixth inning nearly handed the Jackals their fate, but 4-5 days by Francisco Carraballo and Angel Berroa saved the day. Four late Jackals runs helped New Jersey to a 7-5 win over the Tornadoes.
On a warm, humid night at Hanover Insurance Park, the Jackals win the series and improve to 11-2 against Worcester this season.
With the Jackals up 3-0 in the sixth inning, New Jersey committed three errors including a pop up in the infield that found dirt, leading to five unearned Worcester runs.
Down 5-3 in the seventh inning, Nick Giarraputo doubled and Carlos Guzman knocked him home with a hard single through the right side. Guzman ended the day 2-4. In the eighth, Carraballo doubled home Berroa and Sabatella when his line drive off reliever Matt McDonald hit the first-base bag to put the Jackals up 6-5. Carraballo's 4-5 day included four RBIs and two doubles.
McDonald earns his third loss of the season to drop to 1-4.
In the first inning, Carraballo doubled home Gaetano Giunta and Angel Berroa to give the Jackals the early 2-0 lead. Giunta extended his hitting streak to 11 in his 1-4 day. Berroa's 4-5 day extended his hitting streak to 12. Berroa has now reached base in 18 of his last 23 plate appearances.
The Jackals scored in the first inning in every game of this four-game series.
The first of Giarraputo's two doubles scored Carraballo in the fifth inning to set up the aforementioned 3-0 lead.
Isaac Pavlik was his brilliant self. He threw seven innings, allowed seven hits, struck out seven, and allowed only the five unearned runs in the sixth. He earns the win to improve to 8-2.
Tornadoes starter David Cooper earns the no-decision. He allows three runs in five innings.
With the win, the Jackals improve to 42-29, currently three-and-a-half games back of Quebec for first place in the Can-Am standings. Worcester drops to 21-50.
Tomorrow, the Jackals start a three-game set with the Newark Bears. New Jersey sends out Kyle Greenwalt (5-2, 3.98). First pitch is 7:05. The pregame starts 6:55.
