Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Brandon Pinckney had three hits and five RBI and the Worcester Tornadoes earned their first win of the season 7-2 over the Newark Bears Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Pinckney finished with a double and his first home run of the season, while Tony Patane added two hits and a home run of his own. Nick Salotti and Johnny Welch both recorded doubles for Worcester, as the Tornadoes recorded five extra-base hits in support of Dan Sausville.
In his first start with Worcester, Sausville allowed 12 hits and two earned runs to help his new team win their first game of the year. The former Capitales pitcher struck out six and did a masterful job of getting himself out of trouble. Despite totaling 13 hits and three walks, the Bears were held to just two runs and left two runners on base in every inning but the fourth, the seventh and the eighth.
Michael Bourdon, Kyle Regnault and Matt McDonald each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Tornadoes. The trio allowed just one hit and each reliever struck out one Bears batter to help close out the Tornadoes first win of the year.
Sean Campbell took the loss for the Bears allowing five runs in five innings, including four of the five Tornadoes extra-base hits.
The Tornadoes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second behind a big hit from Pinckney. Salotti led off with a double and advanced to third on a Welch single. After the next two Tornadoes went down, Cameron Monger walked on five pitches to load the bases for Pinckney. On the first pitch from Campbell, Pinckney crushed a double to score all three runners. Jerod Edmondson made it a 4-0 game when he singled to drive in Pinckney.
Newark cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, when Bryce Lane singled to drive in Burt Reynolds and came around to score on a Dan Coury single.
The Tornadoes tacked on a run in the top of the fourth when Pinckney blasted a home run for his second straight extra-base hit. On the day Pinckney went 3-for-4 and added two runs.
In the top of the sixth, Patane increased the Worcester lead to 6-2 with his first home run of the year. Things would get interesting in the bottom half of the inning, with Newark loading the bases with no outs but Sausville once again worked out of a jam. After allowing back-to-back singles and a walk, Sausville struck out Reynolds and got Eric McGee to ground into a double play to end his outing on his 105th pitch of the night.
Worcester closed out the scoring in the eight inning with some more action from Pinckney. Patane singled with one out and stole second bringing Pinckney to the plate. The second baseman promptly dumped a single into left field and advanced to second on a Lane error.
Jose Canseco tallied his first hit in a Tornadoes uniform with a single in the first inning.
The Tornadoes will look for the split Sunday afternoon, as they will finish off their series with the Bears with a 1:05 p.m. contest. Pitcher Kevin Cooper will get the start for Worcester. Check out all the action on USTREAM.tv.
