Too much Spirit, not enough Fury
February 6, 2003 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Dallas Fury News Release
To beat the Springfield Spirit twice to open up the season would have been a lot to ask, but the Fury made a go at it. Tonight's game saw much of the same fast paced action as the last one however it was Springfield who hit the big shots when they needed them most and was able to come away with a 97-87 victory. The game started off with a 16 point Fury lead and looked like it was heading towards a blowout, but a late Spirit run cut the lead in half going into the break. The Fury was able to keep Rebecca Lobo in check last game but tonight was a different story. Lobo put in 25 points along with pulling down 14 boards to lead the Spirit. Sue Bird also lit it up for the Spirit. She pumped in 23 points and dished out 12 assists. The Fury would hang tough in the second half to make it interesting. Springfield once again struggled to contain Tonya Washington who poured in 32 points to go along with 7 assists for Fury. Semeka Randall also had a good night, she had 17 points and grabbed 8 boards, but foul troubles late kept her from making much of an impact down the stretch.
Springfield's hot outside shooting down the stretch against a tiring Fury defense sealed the deal. Bird, Lobo and Cash combined to go 27-43 from the field and accounting for 64 of the 97 points for the Spirit. Tennessee relied heavily on hot shooting from Becky Hammon and Marie Ferdinand the previous night, but didn't get the same performances tonight.
The Fury comes back home to enjoy a couple of off days before welcoming in the Birmingham Power on Thursday February 13th at 7:30 at Maryville College.
