Stealth flies through Fury to become back to back Pro Cup Champions

Dallas Fury News Release

Springfield MA: The Houston Stealth is starting to imitate their WNBA counterpart. Tonight they ripped through the Tennessee Fury to claim their second straight Pro Cup Championship, 95-76. The Stealth, the second seed in the NWBL tournament, beat the Chicago Blaze in the semi-finals and expected to match up with top seeded Springfield. However, it was Tennessee that pulled off the upset against the Spirit and made it to the finals. Unfortunately, for the Fury they ran into a Stealth team destined for Glory. Tournament MVP Tina Thompson took control and led her team by pouring in 29 points to lead all scorers. The Houston Stealth has one of the most imposing front-lines in Women's Basketball, with Thompson, Sheryl Swoopes, Michelle Snow and Tamicha Jackson. Tonight they were just too much to handle for the undermanned Tennessee Fury.

Coach John Chancellor, son of Houston Comet coach Van Chancellor, is starting to take a page out of his old man's book by taking two straight. "I've always said that defense will lead us to a win. It's an old saying but defense win's championships and offense puts people in the stands. I think Houston we like to do things in streaks."

For the Fury it was just simply a matter of running out of gas. They were led by Becky Hammon who had 15 points and 6 assists. Hammon was the leading scorer in the NWBL during the regular season. Playing three games in three days definitely took its toll on the Fury. However, being the fourth seed in the tournament and upsetting the number one seed in front of its home crowd was definitely not something to hang their heads about.

It has been a great season for the NWBL. A lot of exciting basketball to go along with some great fans has made it a great success. I would like to thank all those involved in making it a great season. There will be many great things to come for the NWBL, Stay Tuned!
