Fury to face Spirit in NWBL Season Opener

February 6, 2003 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Dallas Fury News Release

Could things have started off any better for the Tennessee Fury? They throw down, with what some are saying the best team in the league, and come away with a win. The Fury fans could not wipe the smiles of their faces when they were watching Lobo, Bird, Cash, and Wolters walk off the court with their heads down. The Fury was the better team on that night, simple as that. Tonight however will be a different story. It is in Springfield’s house, and we all know it will be wild and crazy up there. Uconn fans love Tennessee about as much as Tennessee fans love Connecticut, how about not at all.

“There will be blood in their eyes,” said Coach Minggia. “We expect them to come out fired up, they’ll have their crowd behind them the whole way, it’s going to be a hostile environment.”

Most Tennessee and Springfield fans view the rematch and the opener as an extended battle between the Tennessee Lady Vols and the UConn Huskies. In the first matchup, it was expected that Springfield’s presence down low would be too much for the Fury to handle, and sometimes it was. What Springfield wasn’t expecting however was to be at a loss when trying to cover Tonya Washington, who lit them up for 25 points or in covering Marie Ferdinand. she put in 17. Oh yeah, how about Becky Hammon, she only nailed the game winning three without breaking a sweat. The Fury had five players in double digits, but so did the spirit.

Tonight’s game certainly will not be a friendly affair. Both teams know that it is important to get the season off on the right foot. How coach Eileen Mastrio decides to defend the Fury’s outside shooting could make the difference. However, Coach Minggia knows that if his team cannot control the boards they will be in for a long night.

The quest begins tonight with the opener in Springfield. Game time is set for 7:00 and can be heard on WJXB 1240 as well as simulcast on www.sportsradionet.com.

Those wishing to attend next Thursdays game against the Birmingham Power can purchase tickets at by going to www.knoxvilletickets.com or by calling 865 656 4444.
