Vermont Frost Heaves News Release

I'd suspected it. I'd hoped for it. Now I know it.

We've got a pretty darn good team.

It's not just that the Frost Heaves are 5-1 and, as a result of our emphatic sweep of the Frenzy down on Cape Cod over the weekend, alone in first place in the ABA's Blue North. Or that we'd be 6-0 if not for one brain-cramped third-quarter in our overtime loss to Quebec City on opening night. It's our depth, balance, even temper and cohesiveness. And our ability to go on game-breaking runs.

Saturday, in our 138-121 defeat of the Frenzy, we sank our first four threes and raced out to a 14-0 lead. The tide-to put it in maritime terms appropriate to the Cape-crested at 46. Eight of our guys scored in double figures, including Aaron Cook, who had 24, and Tyrone Levett, who added 18.

Not 24 hours later we were back-and back on our heels. The Frenzy went up 9-0. But we stitched together a 15-0 run of our own in the second quarter, thanks to five straight forced turnovers, and outscored our hosts 30-13 in the third. By the end of the 129-94 victory, Antonio Burks and his golden left arm had logged 30, while Aaron contributed another 17 and Travarus Bennett and Lester Strong added 15 each.

With 0-4 Buffalo having ambushed 4-0 Rochester on Friday night, we edged past the defending ABA champion Razorsharks in the standings.

All exciting stuff. Too bad I missed it.

With a Sports Illustrated story to get working on, I didn't make the trip to the Cape. Steve Barone's call of the games doesn't reach Addison County from Barre's WSNO or Burlington's WJOY after dark-and, because I'm a Mac user, the Internet stream wouldn't come through my laptop. I was reduced to fielding tantalizing emails from Bump Club members like you ("Great second half!" and "Really enjoying the broadcast!"). To which I replied, "Help! What's going on?!"

I will be catching up with the team in Strong Island and Newark this weekend. And, in the meantime, locking down what we have in store for our next three home games. The homestand begins against the Chicago Rockstars on December 7 at the Aud in Barre with Logger Night, featuring Rusty Dewees. After Rus discharges his duties as the Northfield Savings Bank 110% Community All-Star, he'll invite a selection of fans who have dressed like the Logger onto the floor for a little competition. So root through your drawers and closets and pull out yer flannel and tanktops and feed store caps. In Chicago they don't know from Loggers, but after next week, they will.

Meantime, in my abiding role as G.M. of a start-up business, I'm going to ask anyone looking to check names off their holiday gift lists to check out the Frost Heaves gear online at vermonfrostheaves.com/store. We've got hoodies and knit beanies for the wintry months ahead, and within days will be adding fleece pullovers, long-sleeve tees, Flex-Fit caps and Bump dolls. Or you can finger and fondle the full selection at our games.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
