Wilson Tobs News Release
HAMPTON, V.A. (June 27, 2011) - The Wilson Tobs (12-13) fell to the Peninsula Pilots (14-11) for the first time this summer, 11-8 at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.
In a game that turned out to be a slugfest, it was an uncharacteristic four errors committed by the Tobs in the bottom of the third that turned out to be the difference. The four errors (a season-high) led to four unearned runs in the inning and Tobs starter LHP Tyler King (0-1) being chased from the game. King took the loss as his final line was 2.1 innings pitched, eight hits, eight runs, four earned runs, three walks, and no strikeouts. The Pilots scored five runs in the frame and held an 8-2 lead at the end of three.
Wilson didn't waste much time taking the initial lead in the top of the first. The second batter of the game, LF Keith Morrisroe, drew a walk from Peninsula starter Austin Chrismon. Then, 1B Joe Costigan doubled to left-center field, driving in Morrisroe and putting the Tobs on top 1-0. Wilson added another run in the inning when Costigan scored on an RBI groundout by RF Tony Wieber.
The Pilots answered right back in the bottom of the frame, as the first three batters of the inning reached to load the bases with no one out. Designated hitter Terrell Joyce sent the first run home when he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. After catcher Chris Cowell walked, LF Tristan Moore doubled down the left field line to plate another and tie the game up at 2-2. The Pilots would tack on one more before the inning came to a close to take a 3-2 lead after one.
After their big third inning Peninsula added another run in the fourth on a double steal of second and home. The Pilots' Joyce was initially blocked at the plate by Tobs catcher Jeff Kremer, but the collision at the plate knocked the ball out of Kremer's glove, and Joyce was able to touch home plate with his left hand before Kremer could gather the ball and tag Joyce, making it 9-2 Pilots.
The Tobs used the long ball to cut into the Pilots lead in the top of the fifth. With no one out in the inning Wieber blasted a two-run homerun over the left field wall for his second long ball of the year, making it 9-4 Peninsula.
A three-run inning followed for Wilson in the sixth to bring the Tobs to within two, 9-7. The three runs were scored on a single, sac fly, and a wild pitch. All three runs came against RHP John Garrett, who replaced Peninsula starter Austin Chrismon at the start of the inning. Chrismon (2-2) ended up getting the win despite allowing four earned runs on nine hits and five walks in five innings.
The Pilots got a two-run blast of their own in the home half of the sixth to stretch their lead back out to four, 11-7. The blast was hit off the bat of Cowell, playing in his first game of the summer for Peninsula.
The Tobs play their third straight road game tomorrow when they travel to Kill Devil Hills to take on the Outer Banks Daredevils for the fifth time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Chase Bebout (0-3), making his fifth start of the summer. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
