Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. - The Wilson Tobs opened their 2016 season with a win over the Fuquay-Varina Twins at Fleming Stadium on Sunday by a score of 6-3.
This is the Tobs 20th Anniversary Season and over 2,000 fans showed up to mark the momentous occasion. Despite the threat of rain, the crowd showed strong support and enthusiasm throughout the ball game.
Fans were treated to a long bomb early as Cameron Balego of Mercyhurst University went deep to left field to give the Tobs a two-run lead. Oddly enough, he plated his Laker teammate, Jimmy Latona, on the big fly.
Fuquay-Varina pushed across a run in the fourth to bring the deficit to one. However, Wilson answered in the fifth with another homerun. This time, Conner Leonard crushed a homer to deep left center off the Chesson Agency giant bat to make it 5-1 Tobs.
The sixth inning was eventful as Sean Byrnes was called in after the Twins plated two runs on an Austin Herkel single. Herkel had all three runs batted in for the Twins.
Willie McRae scored an insurance run for the Tobs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal a Wilson victory.
Pitcher Zack Kelly led the way for the Tobs with three strikeouts through two innings pitched. The Tobs threw eight different pitchers in the game, an arsenal that combined for eleven strikeouts. Each pitcher recorded a "K."
Sean Byrnes scored credit for the victory and Jake Jones from North Georgia got credit for a save.
No fireworks were shot off due to impeding weather and the band expected to play pre-game was cancelled for the same reason. Instead, Thomas Law Attorneys will present fireworks on June 4 and the band will play then as well.
The Tobs next take to the field against the Peninsula Pilots on Tuesday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. from Fleming Stadium. You can listen to the game live on the Coastal Plain League Webpass.
