July 12, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. - The Wilson Tobs would get a combined shutout from Sean Deely and Jared Gallagher in a 3-0 victory against the Martinsville Mustangs in game one and see Ben Faso deliver his first home run of the season to lift the Tobs to a 6-4 win in game two on Thursday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.
The Tobs hosted Planet Fitness Night along with Throwback Thirsty Thursday and a Farm to Field Farmer's Market at the ballpark.
In game one, Wilson starter Sean Deely spun five innings of shutout baseball to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard. Caleb Dean gave the Tobs a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a run-scoring single that would plate Faso. Shamoy Christopher increased the Wilson lead to 3-0 with a double in the bottom of the fourth inning as Faso and JT Stone touched home plate.
Jared Gallagher closed the book on the Mustangs by working a pair of scoreless innings. Gallagher worked around a lead-off double by Martinsville in the top of the seventh inning. Deely (1-1) fanned six batters through five innings of work while yielding four hits. Gallagher earned his second save of the season and fanned three batters in the process.
Game two would have a different feel as Martinsville opened the scoring in the top of the first inning against Wilson starter Gary Watkins. Following a two-out walk to Romero Harris, Josh Falk took Watkins deep to make it 2-0 for the visitors. The Tobs would answer right back in the home portion of the frame as Faso delivered a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 2-1. A bases-loaded walk to Colby Warren knotted the score 2-2.
Wilson rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning as Carson Freeman gave the Tobs a 3-2 advantage with a single. Jacob Nester followed with a single of his own to plate Matt McCourt and up the lead to 4-2. Martinsville reliever Greg Leban stifled the Wilson offense over the next three innings, fanning seven batters in a row while retiring nine consecutive hitters.
The Tobs needed to crack the code of Leban after the Mustangs knotted the score 4-4. Brenton Doyle worked a 3-2 walk to give Wilson its first baserunner against Leban. Faso connected on his first home run of the season in the following at-bat to give the Tobs back the lead. Leban walked two more batters before exiting the contest.
Cody Smith, Danny Cody, and Luis Acosta limited the Mustangs to a pair of baserunners over the final three innings as the trio combined to strikeout seven Martinsville batters. Smith (1-0) earned his first win of the season, while Watkins was handed with a no-decision. Acosta (4) worked around a lead-off single in the seventh inning to strikeout two of the next three batters that he faced.
Wilson hits the road for a pair of games this weekend before returning home on Sunday to host Wilmington at 6 p.m. It will be Christmas in July at the ballpark along with Bang for your Buck Sunday courtesy of State Farm Agent Jana Lake and Thomas Law Attorneys.
The Wilson Tobs enter their 22nd season as a founding member of the Coastal Plain League.
