SwampDogs Struggle to Score in Post-All-Star-Break Opener

HAMPTON, VA. - Following a stretch of six games in six days, the SwampDogs welcomed a break in the schedule.
In their first game since Saturday due to the Coastal Plain League All-Star break and an extra day off Wednesday, Fayetteville's arms looked good on the road against Peninsula. Nevertheless, facing the Pilots for the second time in Hampton this season, the SwampDogs could not quite break through offensively in a 3-1 loss.
After falling behind by two in the game's first few innings, the SwampDogs used a pair of doubles to score their run in the fourth. Joey Wiemer (Cincinnati) led off the inning with a double to the gap in left-center field. Two batters later, with Wiemer still on second base and two outs, Trent Franson (Houston Baptist) brought his teammate home with a two-bagger of his own down the left-field line.
Wiemer and Franson combined for three of Fayetteville's six hits on the night, as the SwampDogs struggled to produce runs in support of their pitching staff's strong effort.
Making his second start in a Fayetteville uniform, Harry Thomas (Campbell) limited the Peninsula offense to two runs in four innings, netting three strikeouts before yielding to the bullpen. Relivers German Reyes (Mount Olive) and Blake Schriever (Cal State Northridge) then combined to strike out eight and allow one run in the game's final four frames.
The SwampDogs return home for back-to-back games at The Swamp over the weekend with the first coming against the Wilson Tobs for Friday's Spectacular Spookfest and Superhero Night. The stadium gates will open at 6 p.m. with the first pitch set for 7:05.
