Tobs Sign a Pair of Tritons

February 8, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilson Tobs News Release

Wilson, NC - As the Tobs continue to fill out their 2016 roster, a pair of Tritons for Division II powerhouse University of California San Diego head to the Tarheel State. Junior transfers Jack Larsen and Tyler Howsley will make the cross-country journey together to play for the Tobs this summer.

A native of Mission Viejo, California, Larsen, a two-year starter for UC San Diego, had a stellar season in 2015. The 6'1" left-handed hitting outfielder led his team in several major offensive categories: batting average (.358), RBIs (49), slugging percentage (.516), hits (68), doubles (13), homeruns (5), and tied for the team lead with 12 stolen bases. Not to be outdone Larsen was third on the team with 36 runs scored.

In the two previous summers Larsen had played for the Plymouth (Mass.) Pilgrims of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) in 2015 and Santa Paula Halos of the California Collegiate League (CCL) during the 2014 summer.

Howsley, a Mission Viejo, California native, is one of just two Tritons that started in all 57 games during the 2015 season. The 6'0" shortstop was a mainstay in the lineup all season long. Howsley produced career highs across the board. He led his team and was second in the league with 10 sacrifice hits.

Last summer, Howsley played for the Southampton (NY) Breakers of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball league.

Both Larsen and Howsley are teammates all the way back to Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo, California. The duo won the state championship in 2012.

Tobs skipper Aaron Lynch and GM Mike Bell both agree that Larsen and Howsley have a history of winning wherever they have been. Lynch mentioned, "We expect the winning trend to continue when they make their way to Wilson this summer and we think that these two are the right pieces to make our ball club compete this season."

UC San Diego is coached by Eric Newman in his 5th season. Selected as 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) coach of the year, the Texas Tech alum has a 133-85 (.610) career record with the Tritons. In Newman's short tenure with the school he has already won two CCAA tournaments and one regular-season championship. Additionally, Newman has steered his club to three appearances in the West Regional in his four full seasons.

The Wilson Tobs home opener for the 2016 season is Sunday, May 29th. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (252) 291-8627, or by visiting www.wilsontobs.com/tickets.
