Edenton Steamers News Release

WILSON, NC - The Wilson Tobs used strong starting pitching from JT Brubaker and back-to-back doubles in the seventh inning to Steam the Clams 4-1 in both teams Coastal Plain League season opener at Historic Fleming Stadium on Tuesday night.

On an absolutely beautiful night for baseball in Wilson, N.C., JT Brubaker of the Tobs and Eric Peterson (Temple University) of the Steamers locked arms.

Brubaker had a shaky first inning in which the Steamers put runners on second and third by way of an error, fielders choice, walk and a passed ball. Brubaker hunkered down and struck out Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) to end the threat.

Edenton again put two runners on in the top of third with one out, only to have their second rally of the game cut short by a strikeout followed by a ground out.

Peterson, on the other side of the diamond for Edenton through four innings had only allowed two base runners, one by way of a walk and the other by way of the hit batsman.

Edenton's only hit through six innings came off the bat of Laz Villa (Reedley College) in the third inning and Joey Roach for Wilson in the fifth.

Otherwise both Brubaker and Peterson matched zeros for five and half innings, Peterson notching nine strikeouts and Brubaker with nine of his own.

It was in the bottom of the sixth inning that Control began to elude Peterson. Ridge Gonsoulian singled to begin the inning and then two walks followed to load the bags for Wilson. A wild pitch out of the hand of Peterson allowed Gonsoulian to cross the plate and break the tie, giving the Tobs a 1-0 lead.

Brubaker emerged from the dugout for the top of the seventh only to allow a lead-off walk and have his night come to an end. The Tobs went through four pitchers in the inning and after the Steamers loaded the bases, Josh Johnson came in for Wilson and Nick Thompson (East Carolina University) hit a sacrifice fly to knot the score again, 1-1.

Alex Westrick (Xavier University) entered for his first work of the season and Wilson dropped back-to- back doubles to take a 3-1 lead. They added another run in the frame to make it 4-1 after seven innings.

The Steamers bats went silent after the seventh inning, sending six men to the plate and having them all retired. Josh Johnson, for his two and a thirds innings of work earned his first win and Westrick took the loss.

Peterson final line was six innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run (earned), four walks and nine strikeouts, earning a no decision.

Edenton's offense managed only two hits in the loss to Wilson's seven. The Steamers now travel home for the season home opener Wednesday, May 29th vs. the Wilson Tobs
