Wilmington Sharks News Release
Florence, S.C. - The Wilmington Sharks opened up the 2013 season with a 4-0 victory on the road against the Florence RedWolves.
Travis Connolly had not pitched in a few months as he battled through some injuries in the spring, but in the season opener it did not faze him as he threw a complete game shutout striking out seven and only surrendering three hits.
"I had the fastball and changeup working all night and was able to locate my pitches well," said Connolly. He talked about working through injuries in the off season, pushing himself and making himself a better player.
Connolly didn't need a lot of help, but the bats came alive in the later innings for the Sharks. Cody Dolan helped get the Sharks going in the sixth.
The RedWolves starting pitcher Alex Satterfield was throwing very well until Dolan laced a double down the right field line to score Andrew Amaro and give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. In the same inning Alex Freedman singled for the Sharks to give them a two lead.
That was plenty for Connolly as the Sharks also picked up two more runs off of the bats of Dolan and Freedman.
Dolan finished 2-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Freedman went 3-4 with two RBIs for the Sharks. Amaro was the other Shark to pick up two hits in the ball game.
"Connolly threw great on the hill, as we did not want to overthrow him," said McCleaney. "He showed great command and was locating pitches and the bats also came around later in the game."
Alex Satterfield was the losing pitcher in the game as he went 5.2 innings striking out two and threw very well before giving up the first run of the game.
The Sharks will be at home Wednesday evening for their home opener as they will take on the Fayetteville Sawmpdogs with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. at the Shark Tank.
