Sharks Open Up Season On the Road

Wilmington, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks open up the 2013 Coastal Plain League season on the road this evening against the Florence Red Wolves. At the helm for the Sharks is Ryan McCleaney in his third season with the team.
McCleaney coached the Sharks to a playoff berth in 2011 as the Assistant Coach and in 2012 as first year Head Coach he took the Sharks to the playoffs and finished with a record of 29-23. "Were excited to get the season started and I'm excited to see these guys play," said McCleaney. "We have a lot of good talent on this year's team and we look to build off of the last couple years," mentioned McCleaney.
Returning from last year's Sharks team is Alex Freedman who will be in his third season with the Sharks. Zach Stehpens, Alex Luna and Mike Frank are also returning from last season. Freedman, the junior from Lynn University, started in 49 games last season with the Sharks, picking up 39 hits and 18 RBIs. For the Sharks last season, Zach Stephens hit .261, led the team with four home runs and compiled 18 RBIs, slugging .420 during the summer.
Frank from Bowling Green State University threw 57.1 innings last season for the Sharks. He struck out 56 batters and held opposing hitters to an average of .256. Luna the right-hander from the University of Alabama at Birmingham appeared in two games and finished with a 1.80 ERA. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Francis Marion University Spartan's Field.
The Wilmington Sharks are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1000 alumni drafted and 62 alums-including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander-make their major league debut so far.
