Torrington Titans News Release
Six members of the Torrington Titans gave back to the community on Wednesday when they went to the Sullivan Senior Center and handed out lunch to the members there.
"It's nice getting to meet the people who support you," said Titans first baseman, Stephen Eldridge, who is from Columbus, GA. "It was exciting to see how excited they were to see us."
The senior center's members are some of the biggest fans of the Titans. Some of them have season tickets.
"Four of our seniors have season tickets," said Kerry Palmer, an administrative assistant at the Sullivan Senior Center. "Apparently they are their biggest fans."
Eldridge was joined by teammates, David Lerro, Bradley Keith, Kyle Decker, Kolten Yamaguchi and Goshen native Mike Odenwaelder.
Being one of the local players on the team, Odenwaelder, is happy to come out and help out in the community and he even ran into someone from his hometown.
"I met a guy from Goshen, he lives like two miles away from my house," said Odenwaelder, who played at Wamogo High School and now for Amherst College. "I think I went to school with his granddaughters."
The members love the local players.
"They all cheered loudly because he was a local player," said Palmer. "They take pride in their hometown; they are excited for them because they're local."
Decker, who is from Simsbury, is one of the few returners from last season's team and this year he wanted to do more off the field.
"I told Kim (Raimondi, Director of Player Personnel); I wanted to be more involved this season," he said. "Today was fun."
After they handed out a three-course meal of salad, ravioli and dessert, the players themselves sat down and had lunch while talking to the members.
"They love to talk to them and see where the kids are from," said Palmer. "They love to know the history of the players."
For some players, it reminded them of some memories of their own.
"It reminds me of when my grandparents used to come and watch my games," said Lerro, who is from Pennsylvania and plays baseball at Philadelphia University. "They would come down and meet my teammates."
After lunch and signing autographs for all the members, the players joined them for some afternoon Wii bowling, where the players played as the members watched on and even talked a little smack.
Odenwaelder enjoyed the day and was glad that he can help out more than just playing baseball.
"It's nice to get out and give back," he said, "and just say thanks."
