Raging Tide to Honor Hall of Fame Coach John Winkin

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, ME- The Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide will be honoring former Maine legendary Head Coach John Winkin on Monday, June 24 at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach prior to first pitch.
Winkin, who coached 50-plus years at Colby, University of Maine, and Husson will be inducted into the 2013 class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas.
Winkin began his coaching career at Colby College, where he spent 20 years and was named the 1965 National Coach of the Year. Winkin then spent 22 years at the University of Maine where he led the Black Bears to 11 NCAA tournament appearances including two third place finishes in six College World Series. During his tenure in Orono, he received six Northeast Region Division I coach of the year awards.
In 2006 Winkin came out of retirement and coached Husson University for two seasons, and at the age of 84 tallied his 1,000 career coaching victory.
Coach Winkin was instrumental in the development of The Ballpark in the 1980's, even attracting powerhouse University of Miami to come up for a two-game series. Also, his son David served as the first University of Maine Town Manager intern during this time in Old Orchard Beach under Town Manager Jerome Plante, and will be throwing out the first pitch on Monday.
Former players that played under Coach Winkin will be in attendance on Monday to celebrate his hall of fame coaching career.
The Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide, a top tier collegiate baseball program, coincidentally features past and present players from the University of Maine, Husson University and University of Miami.
