Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
A three goal first period wasn't enough for the Saint John Sea Dogs (14-11-3-1) as they took on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan (17-9-1-1) in a weeknight matchup at TD Station. Quick goals from Brady Burns, Zachary Alchorn, and Cam MacDonald propelled the port city team to an early lead, but penalty trouble in the second period and two late game goals from Titan made for a 7-4 loss for the Port City team on Thursday.
Noah Patenaude got the start for the Sea Dogs, making 25 saves, and Chad Arsenault made 22 saves in his start for the Titan.
The Titan opened the scoring at 6:26 when a weird bounce off the glass deflected off of a player in front of the net squeaked its way past Patenaude. After a short review, it was deemed a good goal and given to Cole Huckins.
At 10:03 Cole Huckins was sent to the box for kneeing. After being held to one shot for the first 10 minutes of the period, the resulting power play created a momentum shift in the Sea Dogs favour that they would ride to three quick goals.
Brady Burns scored first, stealing the puck from a Titan defender, deking out Arsenault, and flipping it over the goaltenders back, tying the game up with his seventeenth goal of the season at 14:31.
The Sea Dogs took the lead when 40 seconds later when Cam MacDonald forced a turnover by blocking a Titan attempt to exit the zone and Zach Alchorn picked up the puck, firing a quick shot past Arsenault.
Bennett MacArthur received a tripping penalty and Cam Arsenault increased Saint John's lead to 3-1 at 17:21, tipping a shot from Jérémie Poirier through the crowd and into the far side of the net.
Shots after the first period were 10-9 for Saint John.
Titan captain and points leader Mathieu Desgagnés scored on an early Titan power play after Riley Bezeau was sent off for tripping at 1:15.
A flurry of several penalties, Christopher Inniss for hooking, Cam MacDonald and Logan Chisholm for roughing, and Nathan Drapeau for delay of game, resulted in the Sea Dogs going to the 5-on-3 penalty kill. Mathieu Desgagnés scored his second of the night on the power play at 10:01.
The Sea Dogs took the lead once again with 50 seconds left in the second period, Nicholas Girouard worked his way to the front of the net and sent a backhand pass to Josh Lawrence who dis not hesitate in slamming it to the back of the net for his fourth of the season.
The lead didn't last long as Bennett MacArthur made his way into the Sea Dogs zone with speed and hit the back of the net with less than two seconds left in the period, tying the game at 4-4 going into the final frame.
Shots after the second were 22-16 for the Titan.
With 5:28 remaining in the third period, the Titan power play found the back of the net off a sharp angle shot from Bennett MacArthur, his second of the night. Another goal at 17:11, a sharp angle shot that bounced in off of Patenaude's helmet, sealed the deal in the Sea Dogs 7-4 loss.
Final shots were 32-26 for the Titan.
