Titan Clip Eagles in Overtime

December 3, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

NOTES FROM THE GAME

- Colby Huggan's power play goal, his second of the night, was the winner 23 seconds into overtime as the Acadie-Bathurst Titan topped the Cape Breton Eagles 3-2.

- Cam Squires & Cole Burbidge each notched a goal & an assist as the Eagles rallied from down 2-0 to force the extra session.

- Antoine Keller picked up the win, stopping 19 of 21 shots, while Jakob Milota turned aside 32 of 35 Titan shots.

- It was the Eagles first loss in four extra time games this season.

The game started with a quick pace but neither team was able to generate much in terms of chances, as the shots were just 1-1 eight minute into a then scoreless contest. Both teams were unable to score on a power play in the opening ten minutes.

Bathurst thought they had the first goal of the game on a later penalty to Lincoln Waugh, but after a lengthy review it was deemed the puck was kicked in. (The disallowed goal prompted a premature celebration as fans littered the ice with toys on teddy bear toss day in Bathurst.) Lallier wasn't to be denind though, scoring on a shot from the right faceoff circle later in the opening frame.

At the 4:47 mark of the second stanza, Huggan doubled the Titan lead, but the goal was neutralized less than a minute later when Squires finished a fee from behind the net from Burbidge. Before period's end, Burbidge tied the game- cashing in on a rebound in front of the goal on a Cape Breton power play.

It was a scoreless third period, with the best chance perhaps coming short handed for Bathurst, when Milota denied Huggan on a breakway. The game swung in the final minute of regulation- Eagles captain Zach Biggar felt he was clipped with a high stick, but play went on and it was the Eagles who were short handed after Xavier Daigle was whistled for delay of game.

The Eagles killed the first portion of the penalty, forcing overtime and earning a point in the standings. The game ended in the opening minute when Huggan completed a cross ice pass on the right side of the ice, giving Bathurst the victory.

The Eagles will finish their three game road trip Tuesday night in Charlottetown against the Islanders. Game time is 7 PM. The game is available for purchase on https://shorturl.at/ijrW2 and you can also hear all the action on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
