TinCaps Miss Chances in 6-4 Loss to Loons

Midland, MI - The Fort Wayne TinCaps jumped out to a 4-0 lead against the Great Lakes Loons, but the Loons roared back to beat Fort Wayne, 6-4, Thursday at Dow Diamond. Blake Tekotte cracked a three-run home run and stole two bases. Fort Wayne went just 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position, repeatedly missing out on scoring opportunities. The loss means the TinCaps will have to wait at least one more day to set the franchise record for wins in a season.

The TinCaps jumped in front in the top of the 2nd inning. With two on and two outs, Kevin Hansen smacked a single to center to put Fort Wayne on the scoreboard. Tekotte followed by drilling a 3-1 pitch over the right-field wall for his 12th home run of the year. It staked the TinCaps to a 4-0 lead. That lead didn't last long as Great Lakes rebounded against Fort Wayne RHP Simon Castro. Matt Wallach ripped an RBI double, Dee Gordon drove in a pair with a double and Anthony Hatch put the Loons ahead 5-4 with a two-out, two-run double to right-center.

Great Lakes tacked on an insurance run in the 4th. Jerry Sands clubbed a leadoff double, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Gordon's bunt single, making it 6-4.

The TinCaps wasted an opportunity in the 4th inning. Loons RHP Steve Smith issued four walks in the inning, but Fort Wayne could not cash in. The TinCaps had a runner in scoring position with one out in the 5th but did not score. In the 6th, Fort Wayne had runners at the corners with one out and again could not score. In all, they stranded 12 runners. Fort Wayne RHP Colin Lynch and LHP Allen Harrington combined on three shutout innings in relief.

Smith (3-1) fired three scoreless innings to pick up the win. LHP Cole St. Clair fired a scoreless 9th to grab his 10th save. Castro (7-6) took the loss in his second straight start, allowing six runs on seven hits in five innings. Fort Wayne fell to 79-38, 34-13 in the second half. The Loons upped their record to 66-51, 26-21 in the half.

The TinCaps and Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) finish the four-game series Friday at 7:05pm at Dow Diamond. RHP Dexter Carter (1-1) goes to the mound against Great Lakes RHP Josh Walter (8-4).
