Timely Hitting Leads Mountaineers Past North Adams, 3-2

June 11, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

NORTH ADAMS, MA - Two out hitting was pivotal Monday night as the Mountaineers were able to sneak past the North Adams SteepleCats, 3-2.

Vermont got off to a quick lead in the top of the first. After recording two outs, Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) doubled into the right center gap, bringing up Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia). McGIll then ripped a double into left center, giving Vermont the early 1-0 lead.

North Adams answered back in the bottom of the first. Three singles from Jeffrey Brown (Charleston, SC/ The Citadel), Chad McDaniel (Coral Springs, FL/ Missouri Columbia), and Jackson Coutts (Orono, ME/ Rhode Island) tied the game at one.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth, when Jarficur Parker (Dallas, TX/ Arkansas Pine Bluff) drove in Nolan Tressler (Woodstock, GA/ Georgia Southern) who reached on a double.

North Adams was able to tie the game in the 6th, and the score would remain 2-2 until the top of the eighth. Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone) singled to lead off the inning. Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi) and Straton Podaras (Glen Head, NY/ Radford) both reached on walks. Jarficur Parker was then able to lift a shallow fly ball to right field that no one was able to grab, scoring Medina. That would be all the Mountaineers needed, as they went on to win 3-2.

Andrew Kneussle (Plattsburg, NY/ Canisius) went six strong innings for the Mountaineers, giving up two runs on 10 hits while striking out 8. He was able to work out of multiple jams with runners in scoring position, holding the SteepleCats to those two runs. Tyler Arella (East Northport, NY/ Villanova) picked up the win for the Mountaineers, throwing the last three innings while striking out four and giving up two hits.

Chris Cepeda (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ St. Thomas Aquinas) took the loss for the SteepleCats, throwing seven and a third, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out five.

The Mountaineers (2-3) look to take this moment into the rest of the week, as they host the Valley Blue Sox (3-2) Tuesday night in Montpelier. The game is set to start at 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
