McCabe, Weisenburger Claim NECBL Week 1 Honors

June 11, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Danbury infielder Eddie McCabe (Georgetown) and Sanford right-handed pitcher Jack Weisenburger (Michigan) have been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their efforts on the diamond in the first week of the 2018 season.

McCabe was emblematic of the Westerners' torrid start to the season, especially on the offensive front, leading the NECBL in hits, runs and steals while also adding a home run, for good measure. He batted .524 on the opening week of the season, going 11-for-21 across five games with seven runs scored and a double. He drove in six runs, drew six walks, and currently boasts a .524 / .600 / .714 slash line and an OPS of 1.314. He had at least one hit in every single game, including three multi-hit games, a 3-for-4 showing and a 4-for-4 affair.

The rising sophomore at Georgetown is coming off a rookie campaign that saw him bat just a clip under .300 (.297), going 62-for-209 on the year with 29 runs, 12 doubles, two home runs and 36 RBIs.

Danbury is off to a 4-1 start to the season, tied for first in the South Division, and is averaging nearly nine runs per game with 44 total runs in five games.

Weisenburger, meanwhile, was lights out in two relief appearances. He picked up two saves to lock down both of Sanford's wins last week in dominant fashion. He struck out all eight batters he faced over that span and did not allow a hit, a run or a walk to cap off a perfect pair of performances.

The rising sophomore at Michigan wrapped up a second collegiate season with 15 appearances out of the bullpen. He had 27 strikeouts over 27.2 innings with a .218 batting average against and a 3.58 ERA.

The NECBL congrats both players on their accomplishments.

Week 1 Honor Roll

Cooper Bradford (Valley/North Florida) - Went the distance in his first start of the season, which propelled Valley to a 12-4 victory over Winnipesaukee. More impressively, he averaged over a strikeout per inning, fanning 13 over nine frames while allowing only four hits.

Jackson Coutts (North Adams/Rhode Island) - Was among the league leaders with a .538 average over three games, finishing with seven hits, three runs, and two doubles. Had at least two hits in every game.

Gregory Hardison (Upper Valley/UNC Greensboro) - Batted an impressive .471 over four games last week, helping the Nighthawks win three of those contests. Had two hits or more in three of those games, finishing 8-for-17 on the week with two runs, a double and six RBIs.

Brian Herrmann (Vermont/Stony Brook) - Had two stellar outings, including a six-inning shutout two nights after he came out of the bullpen and tossed a frame of scoreless relief in his season debut. Jared Shuster (New Bedford/Wake Forest) - Led the league in innings pitched and strikeouts by a wide margin, averaging almost two strikeouts per inning. He one of only three pitchers to make two starts last week, tossing a league-high 10.2 innings with 19 Ks and only three walks yielded in that span.

Drew Tipton (Upper Valley/Arkansas State) - Batted over .450 on the week with seven hits in 15 at-bats while scoring five runs and driving in four more.
