Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers received a second-half goal from Diego Valeri but were unable to rally from a two-goal deficit, falling 2-1 to Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC in front of 25,218 fans Friday night at Providence Park. Valeri tallied his seventh goal of the season in the match.
Key plays
Portland had two chances in quick succession in the 10th minute of the match. Cristhian Paredes fired a shot from the top of the box that was parried away by Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei. Marvin LorÃa pounced on the loose ball inside the box and sent a shot toward the goal that went just over the crossbar.
Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Jordan Morris dribbled down the left side to the edge of the six-yard box and slotted a cross to the center of the box. The ball took a deflection and landed for Cristian Roldan, who converted near the goal line.
Sounders FC doubled their lead in the 47th minute. Morris dribbled to the end line and played a cross to the edge of the six-yard box to Raúl RuidÃaz for the finish.
Outshooting Seattle 11-5 in the second half, the Timbers pulled a goal back in the 54th minute on a direct free kick. Sebastián Blanco earned the free kick for Portland just outside the box and Valeri fired a shot through the wall and into the back of the net.
In the 59th minute, Valeri unleashed a curling strike from the edge of the box toward the right corner of the goal, forcing a diving save from Frei. Jeremy Ebobisse chased down the loose ball, playing a cross into the center of the box for Paredes, but his header went just wide.
Searching for the equalizer, Blanco received the ball from Jorge Villafaña in the 68th minute and delivered a long-distance strike that bounced just wide of the left post.
Deep in second-half stoppage time, Valeri served a cross from the right wing to the left post. Blanco connected with a looping header that went just over the crossbar.
Notes:
Jorge Villafaña had five chances created in the match - the most in any match of his MLS career.
Diego Valeri scored his seventh goal of the season, which is third-most on the Timbers season.
Valeri is the sixth player in MLS with both 75 or more goals and 75 or more assists.
The match was the 107th meeting between Portland and Seattle.
