Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The Albuquerque Isotopes will have a name familiar to baseball fans at the helm in 2009, as former Major League third baseman and hitting coach Tim Wallach has been named manager, the 'Topes announced today.

A veteran of 17 Major League seasons with the Montreal Expos (1980-92), Los Angeles Dodgers (1993-96), and California Angels (1996), Wallach, 51, retired in 1996 with 260 career home runs, 2,085 hits, and 1,125 RBI. He was named to the National League All-Star Team five times, was a three-time Gold Glove winner, and was twice a winner of the Silver Slugger Award. In 1987 and 1989, Wallach led the National League with 42 doubles each year. In 1995, Wallach made a brief stay with the Dukes while on an injury rehabilitation assignment, appearing in one game.

After his playing days, Wallach jumped right into the coaching ranks, eventually becoming the Dodgers' Major League hitting coach under Jim Tracy in 2004 and 2005. After serving as hitting instructor for the Dodgers' Single-A San Bernardino affiliate in 1997, Wallach made his managerial debut taking over the Quakes the last two and a half months of 1998. In 2000, he returned to his alma-mater Cal State Fullerton to serve as coach before taking over as manager of the Angels' Single-A affiliate in 2001. This will be Wallach's first appearance at Triple-A as either a coach or manager.

A California native, Wallach led Cal State Fullerton to the 1979 College World Series title, earning that's year's Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's top amateur player. His son Matt Wallach is also a catcher in the Dodgers organization.

Wallach takes over for Lorenzo Bundy, who was named 'Topes manager in late October but left to become the Arizona Diamondbacks' first base coach in December.

The Albuquerque Isotopes, Triple-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will open up their 2009 campaign on April 9 and season tickets as well as mini-plans are on sale now. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255 or visit www.albuquerquebaseball.com.
