Tilson Named to CHL All-Star Game

January 7, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - Corpus Christi Rayz defenseman Mike Tilson has been named to the 2004 Central Hockey League Southern Conference All-Star team, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President Pat Dunn reported Tuesday afternoon. Tilson was selected to the 17-man roster and will be part of the All-Star festivities in Albuquerque, NM culminating on Thursday, January 22nd for the Dodge CHL All-Star Game.

Tilson, 25, is the Rayz leading scorer through the first half of the season with nine goals, 16 assists and 25 points. "I'm very proud to represent Corpus Christi," said Tilson. "It's a great honor and I look forward to representing the Rayz and the city well."

Dunn, who took over as the team's Head Coach 12 games into the season, said that Tilson was extremely deserving of the honor. "All season long, Mike has anchored our defense," said Dunn. "Day in and day out, he's always a hard worker and a great player. He's so valuable to this team and no one is more deserving of this than (Tilson)."

The appearance will be Tilson's second career All-Star game. Two seasons ago, he went to the All-Star Game as a member of the Fort Worth Brahmas. Oddly enough, the game was played in Corpus Christi, and Tilson won the award for having the hardest shot in the CHL, clocked at 97.8 mph. "It was a fun weekend," said Tilson, recalling the experience. "It's nice to get out with the best players in the league and hang out with the guys. You battle hard for 64 games, and this is a chance to have some fun."

The All-Star week of events will include a players banquet featuring NHL Hall of Famer Phil Esposito, a skills competition among the players and end with the All-Star Game on January 22nd. Tickets are available by calling the New Mexico Scorpions office at (505) 881-PUCK

Tilson was the lone member of the Rayz selected to the All-Star team. Midway through the season, the Rayz are 12-17-3 with 25 points. The team has battled injuries, suspensions and several close, one-goal losses, but yet they find themselves only eight points out of a playoff spot. Tilson is confident about the remainder of the season. "It wasn't the start that we had hoped for," said Tilson. "But I'm still confident in this team coming around and I look forward to things going much better in the second half."

The Corpus Christi Rayz are coming off a nine-game road trip and make their 2004 debut at the Memorial Coliseum on Thursday January 8th, as they host the Austin Ice Bats. Tickets are still available by calling (361) 814-PUCK or by coming to the Memorial Coliseum Box Office on Game Night. Fans can also purchase the Rayz second half plan. Get tickets to all 16 remaining home games for under $200. Log on to www.ccrayz.com or call (361) 814-PUCK for more information.
