NASCAR Night with the Ice

January 7, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release

The Indianapolis Ice announced today that the team will be hosting it's first ever NASCAR Night with the Ice on January 17th at 7:00 p.m. from the Conseco Fieldhouse against the Wichita Thunder.

As part of the event, NASCAR Winston Cup driver Sterling Marlin will be making a special appearance at the Ice game to sign autographs. In addition, Marlin's Coors Light Dodge show car will be at the arena and fans will be able to participate in a special pit-stop competition complete with air gun, tires and rear quarter panel. Winners will receive tickets to this years Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Marlin, 46, made his Winston Cup debut in 1976, replacing his father Coo Coo after a crash broke the elder Marlin's shoulder. Since then, he has garnered ten victories, including two Daytona 500 victories in 1994-95 and Winston Open wins in 1988-89 and 1993.

While he is perhaps best know as only the third driver in Winston Cup history to win back-to-back Daytona 500's, joining NASCAR legends Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough, Marlin also has a successful short track background, including Nashville Speedway USA championships from 1980-82. His best finish in Indianapolis came in 2001 when he finished 2nd in the Brickyard 400 after leading eight laps in the race.

The Columbia, TN native has been driving the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge for owner Chip Ganassi since 2001 and led the points standings in the 2002 season for 25 straight weeks. The partnership has been a successful one as Marlin scored Dodge's first victory in its return to Winston Cup racing after a two-decade absence when he won at Michigan International Speedway. Marlin's career earnings exceed $4.5 million dollars.

Known as an outstanding athlete, Marlin was a football standout at Columbia (TN) High and was named Tennessee Professional Athlete of The Year in 1995-96. He also played basketball in high school and continues to be a huge University of Tennessee Volunteers fan.

Tickets for NASCAR NIGHT with the Ice can be purchased at all Ticketmaster locations including select Marsh Supermarkets, Karma Records, select L.S.
