Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers are one win away from being crowned champs of the Stedler Division for 2011, after they defeated the Lowell Spinners 4-1 on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium.

With the victory, despite a Vermont win, the Tigers are still a full game up on the Lake Monsters with one game remaining in the regular season for both teams. Connecticut can clinch the division tomorrow afternoon with either a win or a Vermont loss.

Tigers starter Wilsen Palacios and Spinners starter Raul Alcantara were locked in a pitcher's duel as each were shutting out the opponent in the first five innings.

Connecticut broke the scoreless game with a big two-out rally in the sixth. Javier Azcona began the inning with a base hit, moved up to second on a Chad Wright sacrifice bunt and then to third on a Eugenio Suarez groundout. However, with two outs Tyler Collins ripped an RBI double, followed by an RBI double from Dean Green and an RBI single from Aaron Westlake to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

After issuing a one-out walk to Jose Garcia in the third inning, Palacios allowed just one more base runner over his final 4.2 innings pitched. He compiled a season-high eight strikeouts and didn't give up a run through seven innings to earn his fifth win.

The Spinners got on the board with a run in the top of the eighth inning off of Melvin Mercedes, but Connecticut got the run back in the bottom of the frame with another RBI base hit from Westlake to score Suarez, who started the inning off with a double.

Green finished the night 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Westlake went 2-for-4 with two RBI's.

The Tigers will play game the final game of the regular season against Lowell tomorrow afternoon, which is fan appreciation day at Dodd. First pitch is set for 1:05 PM.
