Tiger-Cats Sign Plesius and Atkinson to Two-Year Contracts

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Monday that the team has re-signed national free agent linebacker Frederic Plesius and defensive tackle Michael Atkinson to two-year contracts.

Plesius, 28, appeared in 17 regular season games and two playoff games with the Tiger-Cats in 2015. The 6-1, 240-pound native of Laval, Quebec, led the team in special teams tackles with 19, and recorded two defensive tackles and one fumble recovery last season. In 49 games during his three-year CFL career with the Tiger-Cats (2013-15), Plesius has posted 24 defensive tackles, 36 special teams tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries. He has also played in seven career playoff games, including two Grey Cup appearances in 2013 and 2014.

Plesius was selected by Hamilton in the second round, 10th overall, in the 2012 CFL Draft out of Laval University. He has attended two NFL mini camps on a tryout basis with the New York Giants in 2013 and Philadelphia Eagles in 2012.

Atkinson, 27, registered four defensive tackles in eight regular season games, and one defensive tackle and one quarterback sack in two playoff games for the Tiger-Cats in 2015. In 16 career CFL games over two seasons (2014-15) with Hamilton, the 6-0, 312-pound native of Windsor, Ontario has accumulated six defensive tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. He has also appeared in four career playoff games, including the 102nd Grey Cup versus Calgary in 2014, and missed the 2012 and 2013 CFL seasons due to injury.

Atkinson was selected by the Tiger-Cats in the third round, 20th overall, in the 2012 CFL Draft after a four-year career (2008-12) at Boise State. He played in 34 games for the Broncos, collecting 86 defensive tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 quarterback sacks, three pass breakups, three forced fumbles and an interception.
