Gwinnett Stripers News Release
NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Tides (1-4) used strong pitching to win their first game of the season, a 3-0 shutout of the Gwinnett Braves (1-4) on Monday night in game one of the four-game series at Harbor Park.
The loss dropped the G-Braves into a third-place tie with Norfolk in the International League South Division. Durham and Charlotte are tied for first in the IL South, each with a record of 4-1.
At the start of the game, it appeared as if it would be a good night for the Gwinnett bats as both Ozzie Albies and Xavier Avery began the top of the first with back-to-back singles. However, the G-Braves would get only two more hits and three more base runners the rest of the way.
The decisive inning came in the bottom of the fifth. Gwinnett starter Luke Jackson had been pitching well, but ran into trouble. With one out, Norfolk's Alex Castellanos dropped a single into left field and David Washington followed with a walk. Robert Andino then smashed a sinking line drive to center field that avoided the glove of Avery and rolled to the fence. The triple scored both runners for a 2-0 Tides lead. Paul Janish then doubled to left, scoring Andino for a 3-0 lead and the eventual final.
Jackson (L, 0-1) pitched 4.1 innings with four hits, three earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts in his Gwinnett debut. He was spelled in the fifth by Andrew Albers, who went 2.2 innings with two hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Sam Freeman worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth with one walk and one strikeout.
Alec Asher started the game for the Tides and pitched 4.1 innings with four hits and six strikeouts in a no-decision. Stefan Crichton (W, 1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Jimmy Yacabonis (S, 1) worked the final 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.
Offensively for Gwinnett, both Rio Ruiz and David Freitas were 1-for-3. Albies and Avery each finished 1-for-4.
Andino was the offensive star for the Tides, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, run scored and two RBIs.
The G-Braves and Tides continue the four-game series at Harbor Park on Tuesday night. Right-hander Aaron Blair (0-1, 18.00) is scheduled to make his second start of the season for Gwinnett. Norfolk will start right-hander Mike Wright (0-0, 6.00). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 6:05 p.m.
Gwinnett returns home on Tuesday, April 18 with a 7:05 p.m. game vs. Rochester. For tickets, call 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
