In a rematch of last postseason's first round series, the Pigs will seek revenge after being swept by their International League North rival Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre Railriders.
RHP Mark Appel (3-3, 4.46 in 2016 with Lehigh Valley) makes his season debut in game one of the four-game set with the RailRiders. The Houston native enters the 2017 season ranked as the No. 20 prospect in the Phillies organization by both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America. Appel posted a 3-0 record with a 1.64 ERA (22.0 IP, 4 ER) in his first four starts of the season, after which he dropped three of his next four games before being placed on the disabled list on May 27, 2016. The Stanford alum would miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow on June, 29.
RHP Luis Cessa gets the ball to start game one for the RailRiders after spending most of the 2016 season with the New York Yankees. He went 4-4 with a 4.35 ERA in 17 games making nine starts for the Yankees. The Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico native went 6-3 with a 3.03 ERA with Scranton after being acquired by the Detroit Tigers on Dec. 9, 2015.
The Pigs got two in the win column on Sunday afternoon by sweeping the doubleheader from the Paw Sox with a 3-1 game one win and followed by a 5-2 victory in game two.
Game one was highlighted by the Bash Brothers Dylan Cozens and Rhys Hoskins as both notched their first homers as an IronPig. Cozens would tie the game at 1-1 as he led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo blast to right-center field. Hoskins then deposited a two-run bomb to straight away center field to give the Pigs a 3-1 go-ahead lead in the sixth that proved to be the game winner.
Jesmuel Valentin continued his torrid stretch to the beginning of his 2017 campaign, as he went 4-for-5 combined in the twin bill with a run scored and an RBI and has hit in all four games this season.
