Chiefs Get First Win as Bats Come Alive

Pawtucket, RI - The Syracuse Chiefs won their first game of the season Monday, beating the Pawtucket Red Sox, 13-5, at McCoy Stadium. Brandon Snyder and Irving Falu each homered for the second day in a row, and along with Corban Joseph, all drove in three runs. Pedro Severino also homered, giving the Chiefs seven long balls in the last two games.

Pawtucket (2-3) started the scoring in the first when Rusney Castillo led off the bottom of the frame with a home run off Austin Voth. Voth would throw three and one-third innings, allowing two runs while walking two and picking up four strikeouts.

Syracuse (1-3) immedietly answered the PawSox run with three in the top of the second. Snyder was hit by a Kyle Kendrick pitch to start the inning. After a strikeout, Pedro Severino singled and Joey Butler singled home Snyder to tie the game. Corban Joseph then doubled to plate a second run. Finally Falu bunted up the first-base line, scoring Butler on a sacrifice bunt for a 3-1 Chiefs lead.

The game remained 3-1 until the fourth. Ryan Court walked with one out against Voth. Mike Miller followed with a double to cut the lead to one.

But once again the Chiefs did not let a half inning go to waste without striking again. Falu and Rafael Bautista each singled with one out in the fifth. Caleb Ramsey followed with an RBI single to score Falu to push the score to 4-2. Two batters later, Snyder homered over the right-center field fence, a three-run shot to open the game up at 7-2.

Syracuse plated three more runs in the sixth. Severino reached third base to start the inning after Bryce Brentz dropped a ball in left field for an error. He scored two hitters later as Joseph singled him home. Then Falu launched the Chiefs second home run of the game, this one a two-run shot to stretch the lead to 10-2.

The Chiefs added an eleventh run in the seventh. Snyder walked and reached second on a wild pitch. Three batters later, Joseph picked up his third RBI of the day on a single to extend the lead to nine.

The PawSox got back on the board in the bottom of the seventh against Trevor Gott. Gott struck out Sam Travis, but Travis reached first when a wild pitch got lodged underneath the padding of the wall behind home plate and was ruled dead by the home plate umpire Charlie Ramos. Matt Dominguez followed with a single. After a strikeout, Allen Craig drove in two runs on a single to cut the score to 11-4.

Severino capped the Syracuse scoring in the ninth. The Chiefs catcher hit a two-run homer with one out to push the lead to 13-4.

Pawtucket added a run in the bottom of the ninth when Miller reached on a hit-by-pitch by Mike Broadway to force in a run.

The Chiefs and PawSox return to McCoy Stadium on Tuesday with first pitch at 6:05 p.m. A.J. Cole is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Hector Velazquez for Pawtucket.
