Norfolk Tides News Release
A strong outing by Troy Patton and a three-run homer by Jeff Salazar powered the Tides to a 6-3 win over Gwinnett Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Patton (1-2) picked up the victory after allowing two earned runs on five hits in six innings of work. The 24-year-old walked two and struck out four, surrendering only a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman in the fourth inning.
Salazar's three-run blast came in the third inning and gave the Tides a 3-0 lead. The homer was the second of the season for Salazar, who also saved a run in the fifth inning with a diving catch of a sinking line drive off the bat of Gregor Blanco.
After a sacrifice fly by Joey Gathright in the fifth inning pushed Norfolk's lead to 4-2, Gwinnett's Matt Young pulled the Braves within one when he opened the eighth frame by reaching on an error before eventually scoring on a wild pitch by Frank Mata.
The Tides plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame, however, as Josh Bell lined a two-run double down the right field line that scored Salazar and Brandon Snyder and give the Tides a 6-3 cushion.
Mata then worked around an infield single in the ninth inning to close out the contest and register his first save of the season.
Snyder, Bell and Gathright each had two hits apiece for Norfolk, which snapped its season-long losing streak at five games.
Gwinnett starter Ryne Reynoso (0-3) took the loss, yielding four runs on five hits in five innings.
The Tides will wrap up their four-game homestand with a 12:15 contest Thursday afternoon. Brandon Erbe (0-2, 7.45) will take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander Tim Gustafson (0-1, 12.27).
