Charlotte Knights News Release
(Norfolk, VA) - Russ Adams singled home Scott Beerer in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Norfolk Tides completed a series win over the Charlotte Knights with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon in the finale from Harbor Park.
Knights reliever Anthony Carter (0-1, 2.45) began the ninth inning by hitting Beerer with a pitch. Beerer took first base and represented the winning run. After a sacrifice bunt from pinch hitter Blake Davis, the Tides had the winning run on second base with just one out.
Carter then walked the next two batters he faced (Matt Antonelli and Xavier Avery) and the Tides had the bases loaded with one out. Steve Tolleson followed and popped out for the second out of the inning.
Adams was the next batter and he stepped to the plate with one hit already on the afternoon. He lined the second pitch he saw from Carter into center field, Beerer came around from third base to score the game-winning run, and the Tides beat the Knights for the third time in the last four days.
After losing Friday's game on a walk-off home run from Norfolk's John Hester, and winning Saturday's game courtesy of a key triple from Dan Johnson, the Knights went to the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday with the game tied for the third straight day.
Former Knights reliever Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 1.42) tossed two scoreless innings for the Tides to earn the victory.
LHP Eric Stults started for Charlotte and did not factor in the decision. He left the game after five innings and a Charlotte lead. In all, he allowed two runs on eight hits and struck-out four batters. Reliever Jhan Marinez allowed a run, which tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The loss for the Knights spoiled a solid effort at the plate by catcher Josh Phegley. Phegley put the club on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a three-run home run - his first of the season. He has now hit safely in six of eight games this season.
The Knights will now return home and open up at seven-game homestand on Monday at Knights Stadium. Charlotte will face the Durham Bulls for a four-game series on Monday, and then host Gwinnett for three games beginning on Friday.
RHP Charlie Shirek (1-1, 6.55) will start for Charlotte, while Durham will send LHP Alex Torres (1-0, 2.89) to the hill in game one.
On Monday, Knights outfielder Jordan Danks will receive his 2011 MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove Award. He'll have the award presented to him by MiLB President Pat O'Conner, who will be on-hand for the festivities. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
Tickets for Monday's game, as well as single-game tickets for all Knights home games are on-sale and fans can purchase tickets online at charlotteknights.com, in-person at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, or by phone at either (704)-357-8071 (North Carolina) or (803)-548-8050 (South Carolina).
