Tide Win with Pitching, Pair of Homers
April 23, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk got two-run home runs from Nolan Reimold and Rey Navarro and a solid outing from Eddie Gamboa in a 4-3 win over the Gwinnett Braves Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park.
The Tides wasted little time in taking the lead, as Reimold belted a two-run shot off of Matt Wisler (0-2) in the bottom of the first to give Norfolk a 2-0 lead. It was the second home run of the season for Reimold, who is now batting .250 with four RBI and a .333 on-base percentage through 14 games this season.
Norfolk upped its advantage to 4-0 in the third frame, as Navarro connected on a two-run blast into the right field bullpen. Navarro also singled in the contest, and he's gone 3-for-7 since being activated from the disabled list (strained left groin) on Tuesday.
The run support was enough for Gamboa (1-1), who picked up his first victory of the 2015 campaign. Gamboa took a shutout into the sixth inning before the Braves plated two runs, as the 30-year-old knuckleballer allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out three.
After Steve Johnson and Chaz Roe combined for three shutout innings of relief, Gwinnett plated a run in the ninth against Oliver Drake. The Braves then put the tying run on third base with two outs, but Drake struck out Jose Peraza to end the contest and pick up his second save of the season.
The win salvaged a split of the four-game series for Norfolk (9-6), as the Tides have yet to lose a series this season.
The Tides continue their season-opening nine-game homestand on Friday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park slated for 7:05 pm. Tyler Wilson (1-1, 3.60) gets the start for Norfolk.
Notes: Nolan Reimold made a sliding catch in left field to rob Cedric Hunter of a base hit leading off the second inning...All four games of the series were decided by one run...With two strikeouts in the ninth, Oliver Drake now has 14 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of relief this season...Norfolk's two home runs gave them 11 on the season, second-most in the IL behind the 13 hit by the Pawtucket Red Sox.
