Tide Washes Out Islanders in Whataburger College Classic Opener

Corpus Christi - Twenty-third ranked Alabama made the most of three solo homers and a four-run sixth to knock off Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 10-2 in the opening game of the Fourth Annual Whataburger College Classic on Thursday night before 2,383 at Whataburger Field.

Former Robstown Cotton Picker Trey Hernandez put the Islanders on the board in the second, depositing a 2-2 pitch from Miers Quigley onto the berm in left field. His fourth home run of the season gave TAMUCC a 1-0 advantage.

Jacob Perales made it 2-0 Islanders an inning later with a one-out RBI double off the wall in left-center field.

Quigley left the contest after 2.1 innings, yielding five hits, two runs and one walk while fanning two over 48 pitches.

The Tide responded with one away in the home half when ninth-place hitter Jake Smith hit his first long ball of the season, a solo shot down the left-field line.

TAMUCC starter Brett Carnline failed to finish the fourth, allowing a two-out, game-tying single to Vin DiFazio. Phillip Garcia entered in relief one batter later and, after a issuing a walk, struck out Josh Rutledge with the bases loaded to end the Alabama threat.

Carnline was charged with a pair of runs and six hits in 3.2 frames. He struck out four.

A pair of solo home runs in the fifth, courtesy of Taylor Dugas and Ross Wilson, chased Garcia (0-1) from the game and put the Tide up 4-2.

Alabama (6-3) posted four more runs in the sixth, thanks to a bases-loaded balk and RBI singles from Rutledge and Wilson.

Austin Evans (1-0) earned the victory in relief, tossing 2.2 shutout innings. He yielded a hit and struck out four.

The Tide bullpen logged 6.2 scoreless frames to complete the contest, fanning seven without a walk.

The tournament continues Friday night at 6 when Texas-Pan American plays host to Alabama.
