Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL - The ThunderBolts took advantage of three Washington Wild Things errors in the sixth inning, scoring three runs and turning a 4-3 deficit into a 6-5 win at Standard Bank Stadium in front of a season-high crowd of 3340 Saturday night.
The ThunderBolts (36-39) got off to a strong offensive start, getting a run in the first inning as Coco Johnson hit a leadoff double and scored on Charley Thurber's base hit.
In the second inning, they added to the lead with a Cody Keefer solo home run. Taylor Smart followed with a single. He stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Johnson's sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
Washington (35-39) fought back with three runs in the third. Austin Wobrock singled and scored on an Andrew Heck double. Chris Grayson singled in Heck and later crossed the plate on a Corey Bass throwing error, tying the score.
The Wild Things took their first lead in the sixth. Wobrock walked and scored on a Heck single.
The lead was short-lived as Charley Thurber reached on an error to begin the bottom of the inning. Johnny Eierman singled to put men at the corners before Keefer dropped down a suicide squeeze. Thurber scored and Keefer was safe at first. Eierman would cross the plate with the go-ahead run on a Taylor Smart sacrifice fly and Keefer later came home when Johnson reached on an error, making the lead 6-4.
The Wild Things picked up back-to-back hits with one out in the ninth, putting men at second and third. Grayson scored on a David Popkins sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game, but Brian Loconsole got Alvaro Gonzalez to ground out to end the game.
Austin Delmotte (2-0) struck out the only batter he faced and picked up the win. Luke Wilkins (2-6) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings. Loconsole earned his sixth save.
The ThunderBolts and Wild Things close out their series with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 3:05. Brady Muller (3-7, 3.79) will oppose Zac Grotz (3-2, 1.12) in game one and Clay Chapman (7-6, 3.36) will take on Chase Cunningham (4-8, 4.71) in game two. Fans will be welcome on the field after the second game to play catch and get players' autographs. The broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
