Danville Dashers News Release
The Danville Dashers fell just short of ending Carolina's FHL-record-tying win-streak on Saturday night at the David S. Palmer Arena, but they came up just short, as Carolina left Guns 'N Hoses night with a 4-3 win. In a tight, physical game where both teams seemed to want the game more than life itself, Carolina got the edge in the first period and never gave it up, despite the Dashers tying the game on multiple occasions.
The night started hot in front of the crowd of almost 1,400 as both teams exchanged heavy hits early on in the first period. It was Carolina that struck first through after Taylor Cutting went to the box for a tripping penalty. Carolina's captain Josh Pietrantonio on assists from Mike Baker and Jan Salak. Though the first period ended without any more scoring as Danville goaltender Matt Kaludis stopped a massive 23 Carolina shots, the remaining time was packed with action and physical play.
It was just the second shot of the period that made its way through Matt Kaludis as Jan Salak buried a shot. Kaludis was screened heavily on the shot, but the Dashers were kept out of the offensive ice by some stifling Carolina pressure.
Fred Hein scored the first Dasher goal of the night after Daniel Martin and Nathan Campbell linked up to put on a beautiful passing display, finding Hein in the slot. Hein wasted no time firing home, and cutting the Thunderbird lead to just one goal. The Dashers tied the game at 2-2 after Ryan Alves scored on a 5-on-3 power play, with Michael Bunn and Tommy Mahoney each going to the box for delay of game and interference, respectively.
The tie didn't last long however as Patrik Zilak went to the box for interference, and Karel Drahorad pounced on the advantage to score on assists from Jiri Pargac and Mike Baker. It was the last goal of the period as the two teams went into the final intermission with a 3-2 score.
The third period, much like the rest of the game, was intense from the start, but really heated up six and a half minutes in as Dominik Fejt dropped the gloves on an unsuspecting Taylor Cutting after a big hit from the latter. Both received the customary five-minute major for fighting, and Dominik Fejt left the ice for the remainder of the game.
Danville tied the game up once again as Nathan Pelligra brought the Danville crowd to a frenzy after redirecting a Nathan Campbell shot past Christian Pavlas. Justin Brausen also got an assist on the goal, which tied the game at 3-3.
In what became a trend in this game, Carolina answered back fast however as Joe Cangelosi found the back of the net on an assist from Michael Bunn, as a screen was just enough to beat Matt Kaludis for the game-winning goal.
Despite the Dashers pulling Matt Kaludis with just under a minute left, Carolina took the game and thus, broke the FHL record for longest consecutive win-streak.
The stars for the night were first star Mike Baker and second star Joe Cangelosi from Carolina. Baker had three assists on the night, and Cangelosi contributed the game winning goal. Daniel Martin from Danville found himself as the third star, as he chipped in two assists and had a solid game overall.
The Dashers are back at the David S. Palmer Arena in Danville this Friday night as they take on the Elmira Enforcers with the puck set to drop at 7 P.M.
