Thunder Remain on Top of Latest Coaches Poll

February 1, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release

Wichita, KS- Despite dealing with a number of injuries to some key players, the Wichita Thunder (27-12-2) remained on top of the latest Coaches Poll released by the Central Hockey League Wednesday afternoon. Wichita is the first team in the league this season to repeat as the top team recognized by the CHL Coaches and received that honor for the third time. Wichita leads the CHL and the Berry Conference with 56 points.

The Poll is released on or near the beginning and middle of each month throughout the regular season. Each first place vote receives 10 points, second place votes earn 9 points, etc.

Wichita remained on top of the poll by a slim one point over the Turner Conference leading Evansville IceMen (25-10-4, league-best .692 win percentage), despite receiving one fewer first place vote than Evansville. Wichita finished with six first-place votes and the #2-ranked IceMen received seven first-place votes. The Allen Americans (24-10-7) earned the other first-place vote.

Eight of the 10 teams in the 'Top 10' changed positions with the Thunder and the Tulsa Oilers (#8) serving as the only two clubs who maintained their position from the previous poll. Rounding out the top five were the Fort Wayne Komets (dropped from #2 to #4) and the Missouri Mavericks (moved up from #6 to #5).

The biggest jump in the recent poll came from the Texas Brahmas who are 6-4-1 in their last 11 games earning them enough votes to move from #10 to #7. No other team rose or fell more than two places.

Wichita is coming off a six point week after winning three out of four games in a five-night span. The Thunder hits the road for the next three games before returning home Friday, February 10th against Tulsa.
