Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (December 13th) - The Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League are very proud to announce their partnership with the Kansas Honor Flight Program, which helps to raise funds to send Kansas War Veterans back to Washington, D.C. to visit their War Memorial that was built in their honor by a grateful nation. On Friday, December 28th against the Missouri Mavericks, the Thunder are very pleased to be honoring Eddie Graham, who will be going on the Spring 2013 Kansas Honor Flight. He is one of less than 61 living survivors that were a part of the infamous Bataan Death March during World War II in the Philippines.
Graham, 94, was a part of the U.S. Army that was forced to surrender to the Imperial Japanese Army in the Philippines in 1942. Graham was a POW and endured unimaginable torture during the Bataan Death March and worked as slave labor in the steel mills in Japan during the war. Graham remained there until the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. Of the 2,000 members of the 200th Coast Artillery, less than 1,000 survived by the end of World War II.
As a part of this, Mayor Carl Brewer and the Wichita City Council will read a proclamation on Tuesday, December 18th making December 28th "EDDIE GRAHAM DAY." This will take place at the City Commission meeting at 9 a.m. and the public is encouraged to attend.
The Wichita Thunder will have a special ceremony during the first intermission to honor this great man. Many noteworthy politicians and high-ranking military personnel are expected to be in attendance that night as a part of the ceremony. Groups who are interested in supporting the Kansas Honor Flight Program can contact Chris Ross at cross@wichitathunder.com to purchase tickets for the game.
Wichita has a pair of home games this weekend, beginning on Friday, December 14th when the Fort Worth Brahmas come to town. On Saturday, December 15th, Wichita will host the Tulsa Oilers for their annual Teddy Bear Toss Night, presented by Bank of the West and the Law Office of Slape and Howard.
