Thunder Overcome Roadrunners In Ninth

EDINBURG, TEXAS ---- After trailing by one going into the ninth the Coastal Bend Thunder posted five runs in the top of the inning to overcome the Edinburg Roadrunners 11-7 Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Roadrunners scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when Amado German scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Robert Matlock to give Edinburg (15-16) the early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning Coastal Bend's (17-14) Bryan Vickers tied things up with his second homerun of the season on a shot into the left field bull pen.

The Roadrunners took the lead once again in the bottom of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Bryon Smith that made it a 2-1 game in favor of Edinburg.

The Thunder tied the game at two in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from designated hitter Manny Mejia to score Amadeo Zazueta, but in the bottom of the inning Carlos Hereaud hit a triple down the right field line and after a throwing error by Vickers advanced home to put the Roadrunners up 3-2.

Coastal Bend pulled ahead 6-3 in the top of the seventh after scoring four runs on four hits, but Edinburg battled back after Smith hit an infield single to score Nick Aranda and a throwing error by Zazueta allowed Vincent Blue to cross home plate for a 6-5 Thunder lead.

Edinburg's Blue drove in Osiel Flores on an RBI double to right-center to tie things up, and Matlock singled to left field to score Blue giving the Roadrunners the 7-6 lead going into the final inning.

In the top of the ninth Edinburg allowed five runs on four hits and were unable to match the final Thunder rally giving Coastal Bend their first win of this series 11-7.

Kelly Casares (2-1) picked up the loss after he allowed five runs on two hits in his two-third of an inning of worked.

Benny Cepeda (3-1) got the win after he pitched an inning and two-thirds and allowed one run while scattering three hits.

The Roadrunners and Thunder will play the final game of this four-game series Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Eric Montoya (2-1) will face J.J. Trujillo (1-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
