Thunder opens training camp, adding power and pitching

June 4, 2009- ROBSTOWN, TX----The Coastal Bend Thunder began its inaugural season today with the players reporting to training camp. Camp will take place at Fairgrounds Field and will be open to the public. It will run from June 4 thru June 9 between 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. On Saturday June 6, an inter-squad game will be held at Fairground Field at 1pm. Fans are encouraged to attend.

The Thunder also announced they signed pitcher Dayle Campbell, a former fifth round draft pick in 1999 of the Detroit Tigers. They also added some power to their line up with the additions of Manny Mejia & Leivi Ventura. Mejia played in the Pittsburg Pirates and New York Yankees organization while Ventura played in the New York Mets organization. "Both of these guys put up good power numbers last year," said manager Al Gallagher. "We looking forward to having them on the team."

Also signed was first baseman Bryon Vickers a former Seattle Mariners draft pick and pitcher Jason Herman a former Pittsburg Pirates draft pick.

The Thunder opens it season June 11 in Harlingen then return for their home opener on June 15th against the Edinburg Roadrunners.
