Thunder make environmental "Pledge"

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that they have partnered with the NJ Watershed Ambassador Program, an AmeriCorps program hosted by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Watershed Management, on a new initiative that will educate students about water pollution and reward them for making a "Pledge" to live in a more environmentally sound way.
"As an organization that desires to be the "greenest" team in Minor League Baseball it is a natural fit for the Thunder, who play in Waterfront Park, along our state's largest river, to adopt "Clean Water Education" as a cause to support," said Thunder General Manager Brad Taylor. "We are happy to be a part of the Watershed Ambassadors' efforts to educate people about the effect they have on our water supply."
The NJ Watershed Ambassadors are currently offering interactive presentations for students of all ages. At the conclusion of the lesson, students are given a "Pledge" form listing actions they can take to make less of a negative impact on our watersheds. Students are encouraged to sign the pledge form and return it to the Thunder in order to earn two tickets to one of the team's Earth Day Weekend games (April 21 at 1:05 or April 22 at 1:05). The students will be recognized on the field for their commitment to the environment in front of the crowd in a pre-game ceremony.
"We are excited to partner with the Trenton Thunder to bring environmental education and baseball together in this wonderful opportunity for students in New Jersey," said Michelle Ruggiero, Program Manager for the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program. "It is encouraging to see a sports team, especially a successful one here in the capital city, take an interest in promoting environmental awareness."

The NJ Watershed Ambassador Program is an AmeriCorps program hosted by the NJDEP, Division of Watershed Management. The program works with local communities throughout the state training volunteers in river monitoring as well as conducting watershed presentations. The Thunder game on Saturday, April 21 will feature a Thunder Batting Helmet Giveaway to the first 2,000 fans age 6 and over thanks to Dietz & Watson. The game on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22 will feature an "Earth Baseball" giveaway to the first 2,000 fans age 6 and over courtesy of Tyco International.
