Trenton Thunder News Release

(Reading, PA)- Trenton Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez hit a solo home run and Third baseman Chris Malec had three hits as the Thunder swept the Reading Phillies with a 8-2 win on Monday night from First Energy Stadium in Reading. Trenton is now 11-2 against the Reading Phillies in the season-series, and Trenton reduced its magic number to win the Northern Division to seven (any combination of Trenton wins or Portland losses).

With the game scoreless in the fifth inning, Gonzalez connected on a solo home run off of Reading Starting pitcher Tyslon Brummett (2-7) to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The Thunder tacked on a run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by First baseman P.J. Pilittere. Reading cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Third baseman Pedro Feliz hit a solo home run off of Trenton reliever Jhonny Nunez. Feliz was making a major league rehabilitation appearance for the Reading Phillies. Feliz would hit a second solo home run in the eighth inning off of Trenton reliever Jose Valdez.

Trenton (77-50) opened up the lead with a four-run seventh inning. The Thunder loaded the bases up with one out against Brummett. Brummett was relieved by J.D Durbin. Durbin retired Catcher Francisco Cervelli for the second out of the inning, but Designated hitter Austin Jackson followed with a two-run single to make it 4-1. Third baseman Chris Malec then continued the two-out flurry with a two-run double to increase the lead to 6-1. Malec finished the game 3 x 5 with a double and two RBI. Trenton capped off its night offensively with a two-run single by Cervelli in the eighth inning.

Trenton Starting pitcher Victor Zambrano (1-0) picked up the win in his Thunder debut. He scattered four hits and struck out five. He only walked one. Brummett allowed eight hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss. Trenton Second baseman Kevin Russo and Shortstop Reegie Corona also had two hits in the win for Trenton.

Trenton returns to Waterfront Park on Tuesday night to start a series against the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. RHP George Kontos (4-11, 3.78) will start for the Thunder against Harrisburg RHP Adrian Alaniz (0-5, 3.97).
