
Thunder Defeats Eagles 4-2

LOVELAND, CO- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Colorado Eagles 4-2 Wednesday night at the 89th consecutive sellout at the Budweiser Events Center. Joe Blaznek and Kris Wiebe each recorded a goal and an assist for the Thunder who are now tied for second place in the Northwest Division with the Oklahoma City Blazers. Sebastien Laplante recorded 41 saves for the Thunder in his 23rd victory of the season. Riley Nelson and Nick Parillo each scored a goal for the Eagles whose record fell to 38-12-6 for 82 points although they still hold a 13-point lead in their division.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period with the Eagles out shooting Wichita 9-5. Colorado killed all three penalties they faced and the Thunder killed the Eagles lone opportunity.
Nick Parillo gave the Eagles their only lead of the game when he tallied on a rebound only 39 seconds into the period. Wichita notched the next three goals closing out the second period. Kris Wiebe tied the game at the 9:06 mark and Travis Clayton took a feed from Joe Blaznek to give the Thunder the lead that they would not relinquish. Finally, Joe Blaznek scored his team-leading fourth shorthanded goal of the season to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead going into the third period.
Riley Nelson cut the Thunder lead to one goal with four minutes remaining in regulation, but the Eagles couldn't get the equalizer and Tyler Liebel turned the lights with 36 seconds remaining on a empty net goal. The Eagles out shot the Thunder 43-25 in the game and neither team was able to score a power play goal with Colorado going 0-4 and the Wichita Thunder 0-6.
