BOARDMAN, Ohio. - The Mahoning Valley Thunder have been assigned Arena Football League veterans WR Chris Johnson and DB Reggie Perkins and former Duke Blue Devil DL/OL Matt Zielinski by the arenafootball2 League Office, today.
Johnson (6-2, 185) brings four seasons of AFL experience with him to the Valley. His AFL career began in 2003 with the Carolina Cobras where he caught 36 passes for 386 yards and nine touchdowns in seven games. Over his four seasons, Johnson has played in 21 games, grabbing 62 receptions for 720 yards and 14 touchdowns. Defensively, he has recorded 24.0 tackles during his career.
Perkins (5-9, 165) began this season with the Cincinnati Jungle Kats. He was re-assigned to the league on May 1 before being assigned to the Thunder today. Perkins has plenty of af2 experience with the Memphis Explorers, Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings, Quad City Steam Wheelers and the Jungle Kats. His AFL experience has been with the Carolina Cobras and the Detroit Fury.
Zielinski (6-3, 290) played four seasons at Duke University as a defensive lineman, appearing in 41 career games, including 34 starts. Zielinski closed his collegiate career with 189 total tackles, 41.5/141 tackles for a loss and 12.0 sacks for 77 yards. On April 30, 2004, Zielinski was signed by the Baltimore Ravens and on August 25 he was placed on the Ravens IR. He was later released on September 5, 2005 from the Ravens.
The Thunder had one open spot on the 22-man roster and in order to free up two more spots, the team re-assigned DB Mario Butler and placed FB/LB Mike Stanec on IR. The current roster stands at 22.
The Mahoning Valley Thunder 2007 season is underway on Cortland Banks Field at the Chevrolet Centre. In the historic inaugural game, a sellout crowd of 5,954 witnessed the first win in team history.
