Clearwater Threshers News Release
DUNEDIN -- Ethan Stewart turned in another strong start on Thursday, and Logan Moore drove in a season-high three runs as the Threshers topped the Blue Jays 7-5 at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Clearwater broke a 3-3 tie by plating three runs in the seventh inning, and fought off several late Blue Jays rallies to secure their second-straight win.
The Threshers opened the scoring in the second inning against Blue Jays starter Daniel Norris. After Willie Carmona drew a lead-off walk, Nick Ferdinand hit a come-backer to the hill that Norris fired wide into centefield. A wild pitch then moved the runners down to second and third.
Moore came through on a 2-2 pitch with a liner to center, plating both Carmona and Ferdinand to make it 2-0.
The Blue Jays answered with a pair of their own against Stewart in the third, and the game remained tied until the sixth inning.
The Threshers rallied with two down facing reliever Kramer Champlain (1-1). Moore got it started with a single, and Malquin Canelo chopped a double down the third base line. Left fielder Dwight Smith Jr. mishandled the ball in the corner, and that allowed Moore to come in and score on the error, giving the Threshers a 3-2 lead.
Kevin Patterson brought it back even in the home half. After Stewart narrowly missed the corner with a 1-1 offering, Patterson drove a payoff pitch over the high wall in right-center for his second homer of the year, bringing the teams to a 3-3 tie.
Clearwater took advantage of another Dunedin error on their way to plating three runs in the seventh.
Brian Pointer walked to open the inning, and KC Serna followed with a single to left. Pete Lavin dropped a bunt down the third base line that third baseman Gustavo Pierre threw away, allowing both Pointer and Serna to score.
Lavin made it all the way to third on the play, and he would cross the plate as well when Harold Martinez lined the first pitch he saw through the left side to extend the Clearwater lead to 6-3.
After the Blue Jays managed a run off reliever Colton Murray in the eighth, the Threshers again grabbed a three-run advantage in the ninth when Moore delivered a two-out single to center, bringing home Carmona for his third RBI of the ballgame.
Dunedin threatened again in the bottom of the ninth, making it 7-5 after Smith's RBI single scored Christian Lopes from second. With one out and the tying run at the plate, Chris Burgess came on and induced a pair of grounders to second to secure his first save.
Stewart (1-1) earned the win after a seven-inning performance, holding the Blue Jays to three runs - two earned - on seven hits. He walked just two and struck out three. It was the third time this season that Stewart has hurled seven innings in a start.
Clearwater will try to make it three-straight on Friday, as the Threshers return home to Bright House Field for Bright House Networks Customer Appreciation Night as well as Family Fun Night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., and the game can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
