Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - After sputtering for over two and a half weeks without consecutive wins to open the season, the Stone Crabs finally learned something in their most recent stretch against the Marauders. With good pitching comes timely offense, and for the last three nights, Charlotte got both to take their second series from a division rival. On Thursday night, the Stone Crabs won their third straight against Bradenton with an explosive 13-6 victory in front of 1,984 at Charlotte Sports Park. The win pushed the Stone Crabs (8-12) back to within four games of the .500 mark.
After chasing John Kuchno in the second inning two nights earlier at McKechnie Field, the Stone Crabs applied pressure on Jason Creasy (1-1) in the first. A double by Andrew Toles and a single by Tommy Coyle preceded a walk to Leonardo Reginatto, which loaded the bases with nobody out. Following a Kes Carter walk that made it 1-0, Tyler Goeddel struck a two run single for a 3-0 lead. Goeddel then tried stealing second and was struck by Jin-De Jhang's throw as he slid feet first, which deflected the ball into the outfield. The errant throw allowed Carter to score, and Goeddel would soon come in on Maxx Tissenbaum's deep sacrifice fly to right center for a 5-0 lead.
All nine hitters came to bat in the third with a 6-0 advantage after Reginatto's two out single scored Jonathan Quionez from second. Facing lefthander Andy Otahendi, Goeddel led off with a double and moved to third on Tissenbaum's groundout to first. Following a four pitch walk to catcher Jake DePew, Josh Sale scorched an RBI double to the left field wall. Quionez then sent a drive to the warning track in left that was deep enough for DePew to tag from third for an 8-0 lead. A walk to Toles brought up Coyle, who sent what should have been an inning-ending grounder to first. But Jordan Steranka had a tough time with it and knocked it down the right field line, allowing both Sale and Toles to motor home for a 10-0 lead.
Lost in the shuffle of the offensive outburst was Austin Pruitt's search for his first career victory. Following five innings in which he scattered three hits for a single run, he finally had a hiccup in the sixth after getting the first out of the inning. He then sandwiched a Josh Bell single in between a pair of walks to load the bases for Max Moroff. After a drawn out at bat, the switch-hitting second baseman ripped a bases clearing triple down the right field line to bring in three runs. Pruitt (1-1) then departed for newly acquired righthander Jorge Rodriguez, who was added to the roster from extended Spring Training earlier in the day. After surrendering an RBI single to Walker Gourley, the 22-year-old retired the next two hitters to end the inning. In his Florida State League debut, Rodriguez wound up pitching three and a third innings of scoreless relief in what was ultimately a 13-6 win for the Stone Crabs third consecutive victory.
